Day four of a combined mermay and may sketch a day!
A bit more info on this species: (them swimming is just a fun doodle)
The male desert merms will generally have a really difficult life, in the merm culture usually only a select number of females will reproduce and when she does, three quarters of the population of eggs are male. When young, the males are sent out to battle tough creatures ranging from desert wyrms to giant wyrm larvae, ferocious sand cats and others. Generally it's not just the winners who will be granted access to a female, but the more impressive the battle and the more scars or injuries without actual loss of limbs will be deemed more worthy. So when these males go out and fight, their goal is getting maimed as possible while still winning the fight. They are allowed to fight in groups, however many of these poor creatures will perish in the fight.
After a male has won, and survived, he will mate for life with a single female in the group. If there are no available females, a female can choose to leave the community to become a matriarch and create a new one.
